As many of you may have heard, on February 27,2010 a disasterous earthquake caused severe destruction to yet another country. Chile was that country, that unfortunately was hit by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake. This massive quake happened to be 500 times stronger than the 7.0 earthquake, that took atmost 200,000 Haitian lives in the last month. It has been of much debate, whether it's unfair that Haiti is recieving more aide than the South American country, Chile.
After reading articles, I learned that the death toll in Chile was approximately 800, while in Haiti the death toll was atleast 200,000. Yes, it is very sad indeed. It was stated that after an earthquake in 1985, the Chilean government made buildings earthquake-resistant, which is pretty clever. So when this tragedy took place, a very few structures collapsed fully. On the upside, a vast amount of civilans may have been left homeless, but atleast they survived, whichis the least i can say about Haiti. In my opinion, Haiti suffered a greater loss.
In addition, the country of Chile was well equipped in case of natural disasters. They were definately much more prepared for disasters than Haiti was. Also, the government was much more standardized and wealthier than Haiti. Thankfully, their are thousands of people that are helping the people of Haiti now, including many celebrities. The American redcross and the SOS Children's village are both lending a helping hand to these countries. If I must say, it's terrible that people are suffering from this disaster and I pray that they will all be able to recover. I hope that everyone, whom survived both of these earthquakes, will be able to recieve medical aide and anyother necessities they will need. I believe that people should not feel that it's unfair that Haiti is reciveing much more help than Chile because Haiti's situation is much more drastic than Chile's. Chile has indeed suffered, but atleast many people came out in one piece, which is not exactly samething you can say about the Haitians. However, I hope that in time all will be well again.
